By downloading, installing, or using the Smelldar mobile application ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the App.
These Terms apply to all users of the App, including anonymous users and users who have linked an Apple or Google account.
Smelldar is a crowdsourced environmental awareness platform. It allows users to anonymously report odours and bad smells on a shared map, confirm reports submitted by others, and comment on smell incidents.
The App is intended to be used as a tool for community awareness and environmental advocacy. It is not an emergency service. If you are experiencing a hazardous chemical emergency, contact your local emergency services immediately.
Smelldar does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any smell reports. All reports are user-generated and unverified.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Smelldar. By using the App, you represent that you meet this requirement. If you are under 18, you confirm that you have your parent or guardian's permission to use the App.
Smelldar automatically creates an anonymous account when you first launch the App. You are assigned a randomly generated codename as your public identity. You do not choose or control your codename.
You may optionally link your anonymous account to an Apple ID or Google account to preserve your history across reinstalls. See our Privacy Policy §6 for details on what data is shared during linking.
You agree not to use Smelldar to:

You retain any rights you may have in the comments and content you submit. By posting content in the App, you grant Smelldar a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to store, display, and distribute that content within the App for the duration it exists (comments are deleted when the associated smell cluster expires).
You represent that any content you submit:
We do not pre-moderate content. If you encounter content that violates these Terms, contact us at [email protected].
All smell reports are:
You must have genuine reason to believe an odour exists at the reported location. Intentionally false reports undermine the community's ability to trust the data and may constitute misuse under §5.
The Smelldar name, logo, app design, and all original content are the property of Smelldar and are protected by applicable intellectual property law. You may not reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from any part of the App without our written permission.
The App is built using open-source software. Applicable licences are included in the App bundle.
The App is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind. We do not warrant that:
Smelldar is an awareness tool, not an authoritative environmental monitoring system. Do not rely on it for safety-critical decisions.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Smelldar and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of the App, including but not limited to:
We may suspend or terminate your access to the App at any time, with or without notice, if you violate these Terms or for any other reason at our discretion. You may stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it. To request deletion of your account and data, contact [email protected].
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes will be communicated via an in-app notice. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.
